The Mystic in Bishop

Posted on Saturday 18 March 2006

We had a wonderful 4-day weekend skiing in Tahoe (thank you, LACS, for knocking school off Monday and Tuesday for no apparent reason). Nathaniel managed his first Black Diamond run, and Joy enjoyed her very first day on skis ever. Armando had “my best day ever and my worst too”, taking a killer faceplant halfway through the day which drained his confidence and left a red welt across his forehead too. I’d have photos but my camera batteries ceased functioning at temps below 30 degrees. It was only 4 degrees at the top of Dipper chair, no wind chill, the day Nathaniel and I skied together! Normal daytime temps hovered in the 20s. But the amazing snow was worth it. Occasional flurries kept the whole mountain powder-fresh a few inches at a time, blanketing the house too.On our way home we stopped at the Sizzler in Bishop for dinner. We emerged to find another mysterious note, much like the first, on our windshield:
Nathaniel managed to decode it as we pelted south along the 395 ahead of a big snowstorm. This note also gave him the clues he needed to finish decoding the first one. So if Nathaniel is right, the notes are both addressed to him, and come from something called The Mystic. The Mystic, Nathaniel says, must be a group of people (note the plural pronoun “we”); they know him somehow, and have some sort of benevolent concern for him. This most recent message appears to read:

who you are
is more important
than what you do
but what you do
affirms and fuels
who you are

Hmmm.

Something tells me we haven’t seen the last of The Mystic.

And why do they keep contacting my son?
